It also gives the long time reader of the Kate Burkholder series a look into her maternal side - something that we don't normally see from the chief of police of Painters Mill. Its a great little book and a good lead in to the next book in the series. I really enjoyed it. There wasn't much in the way of intrigue or true mystery. The book opens with a desperate young mother giving birth in a room unassisted and then dropping off the newborn at the Amish Bishop's house. As Sheriff, Kate is called and she starts to investigate where the mother is. It's pretty easy to guess, the baby is left with an Amish quilt and a homemade wooden rattle. Things start to click into place pretty easily.
