City Sauna is a brothel serving 300 customers a week. Because it's illegal to profit from sexual activity, Kath charges a door fee and discreetly ignores what goes on upstairs. A Very British Brothel (Channel 4), a documentary going behind the scenes with the sex workers and clients at this Sheffield establishment, was a feat of PR for the sex trade. Everyone from manager Kath and her daughter Jenni to staff members Anna and Foxy was happy and well-paid, eager to show off the industry like a cheeky British seaside postcard, a tale of naughty boys, saucy ladies and no harm done. There were only the briefest allusions to the sex trade's dark side: customers who turn nasty, women working on the streets at the mercy of predatory pimps. There was an anti-trafficking poster on the wall, and Kath made rigorous background checks on new staff. But how many brothels are so conscientious? It was all very well to have a nudge-and-wink voice-over putting a positive spin on things, but the facts about British prostitution speak for themselves: 68 per cent of women in prostitution in the UK experience post traumatic stress disorder, while nine out of 10 women working in prostitution in Britain want to stop but feel they can't.

Kath and Jenni, City Sauna's mother-and-daughter management team. Photograph: Channel 4 I loved every minute of it, but I should confess that I am entirely susceptible to this sort of thing: easily charmed, endlessly amused and instantly inclined to change my thinking and regard massage parlour-keeping as a doughty and public-spirited pursuit. This is certainly how City Sauna comes across. The women who work there, especially those who have previously worked on the streets, regard it as safe and welcoming. Many claim to enjoy the job, and all are "mature" enough to make their own decisions. "They're not traffickered, " as Cath put it. The business relies on its clutch of repeat customers as much as they rely on it. A few unabashed regulars were even willing to go on camera and sing its praises. Sean, a 39-year-old self-professed commitment-phobe, likes the atmosphere so much he sometimes just drops by for a cup of tea. Actually, I got the impression that Sean could be a little annoying when you're trying to run a business.
